What is a buffer tank, and how does it work in a heating system?

A buffer tank, also known as a hot water accumulator tank or thermal store cylinder, efficiently stores heated water from a heat source, such as a boiler, heat pump, or electric storage hot water system.

It allows the heat source to heat the water to the desired temperature. Then, it gradually releases the heat to maintain a continuous hot water supply, reducing energy consumption while extending the lifespan of the equipment.
